A personal note from Mary -
It wasn’t exactly a lifelong dream to someday owning a children’s clothing boutique… In reality it just happened.
Before the days of internet I once stumbled upon a mail-order store in Ephrata, PA called The Boys Shoppe that would send what then was referred to as “husky” items to me. I would try them on my son and return what didn’t fit. The only alternative at that time was the Sears Toughskins jean that by the time I cut them off the double knees were double shin guards so knowing how cruel children can be to each other I used the Boys Shoppe regularly and came to depend on them to get us through those early days.
Finding it a practical thing to sell my grandson’s outgrown clothing on Ebay years later, I soon found that I enjoyed interfacing with buyers looking for affordable quality clothing for their children. From that Ebay auction experience grew knowledge of what buyers, mostly Mothers, were looking for and having difficulty finding for their children. Having struggled over the years of finding clothing to fit my only son I knew the frustration these buyers were finding with both the styles available and sizes that are virtually impossible in some cases to find. I could empathize with these shoppers and began my research as to what manufactures carried plus size kids clothing which I soon found were few and far between.
Never having thought of myself as a fashion conscience person, or even someone that could pull a wardrobe together, here I was venturing into opening a children’s clothing store! What was I thinking? I have never even had a girl to dress or a granddaughter.
If I had only one transferable skill from my 29 years with AT&T it was a sense of customer service, and it was mightily reinforced by an experience with Norstrom’s in Tyson’s Corner, VA that I’ll never forget. They actually made calls to other stores to find a dress for me that they did not have in their store.
These pieces of my life experience just sort of gelled into three legs of a mission statement:
- Provide the best customer service possible
- Sell quality products at affordable prices
- Sell kids plus size clothing in addition to regular sizes
...and now well, here I am a year later still learning and developing relationships with my customers, hearing and listening to their concerns, providing that special dress for a wedding or piano recital and loving every minute of the long hours spent to get here.
